Alcohol

How It Works

Alcohol, specifically ethanol, is a central nervous system depressant that affects the brain by altering neurotransmitter function. When consumed, alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream through the stomach and small intestine. It crosses the blood-brain barrier, enhancing the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and reducing the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. This results in slowed brain activity, causing relaxation, lowered inhibitions, and impaired motor coordination. In higher doses, alcohol further impairs cognitive and motor functions, potentially leading to unconsciousness or alcohol poisoning. Its effects vary based on the amount consumed, individual tolerance, and the rate of consumption.

Understanding the Risks of Alcohol Withdrawal and Quitting

Alcohol addiction is a widespread issue, and while quitting is commendable, it's vital to recognise the dangers of sudden cessation. Withdrawal symptoms can range from mild discomfort to severe complications, including tremors, anxiety, nausea, and even life-threatening conditions like seizures and delirium tremens. Moreover, repeated attempts to quit may worsen symptoms, a phenomenon known as the kindling effect.

Quitting alcohol abruptly without medical supervision can also lead to self-harm or harm to others due to impaired judgment. Thus, seeking professional help is crucial. Supervised detox programs offer medical support to manage withdrawal safely, while therapy and support groups provide emotional guidance for long-term sobriety. Remember, recovery is challenging, but with the right support, it's achievable.
