the 12 steps

The 12-Step Program is a structured approach to overcoming addiction, originally developed by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in the 1930s. This program has since been adapted for various addictions, including narcotics, gambling, and overeating. The 12 steps provide a spiritual and practical framework to guide individuals through the process of recovery.

The program begins with admitting powerlessness over the addiction and recognizing that life has become unmanageable. This initial step is crucial for fostering acceptance and humility. The subsequent steps involve seeking support from a higher power of the individual's understanding.

Participants then engage in a moral inventory, acknowledging and making amends for past wrongs. This helps to address the emotional and psychological aspects of addiction, promoting personal accountability and healing. The program also emphasises the importance of maintaining a supportive community, encouraging regular attendance at meetings where individuals share their experiences and support one another.

Continual self-reflection and improvement are central themes, with the final steps focusing on maintaining sobriety and helping others achieve it. The 12-Step Program's holistic approach addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of addiction, making it a widely respected and effective path to recovery.
