eating disorders

Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions characterised by abnormal eating habits and often an unhealthy preoccupation with food, weight, and body shape. They encompass a range of disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and others. Eating disorders can have serious physical, emotional, and psychological consequences and require comprehensive treatment and support.

Individuals with eating disorders often experience distorted body image, leading to behaviours such as restrictive dieting, binge eating, purging, or excessive exercise. These behaviors can become coping mechanisms for underlying emotional issues, stress, trauma, or low self-esteem. Despite the harmful impact on physical health, those affected by eating disorders may struggle to recognise or acknowledge their condition, which can delay seeking help.

Early intervention and treatment are highly beneficial for recovery from eating disorders. Treatment typically involves a multidisciplinary approach, including medical monitoring, nutritional counselling, therapy (such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or dialectical behavior therapy), and support groups. Family involvement may also be helpful, especially for adolescents.

Raising awareness about eating disorders and challenging societal norms around beauty and thinness are important steps in prevention and support. By fostering a supportive and understanding environment, individuals affected by eating disorders can access the help they need to heal and develop a healthy relationship with food and their bodies.
